Groezrock 2010 the breakdown

Just got back from 2 days of punk, hardcore and metalcore music @ festival Groezrock 2010 in North-Eastern Belgium (Meerhout). We've (= Jean, Stevy & me) seen great shows, eccentric people and of course ..
Alex, the German who thought our gin had one funny looking colour.
Sam, the drunk neighbour whom I taught to pee like a man!
Bieke, who lost her lighter but found the warmest greatest guys from around. Ask Steven.

The bands!
This will be a short overview of the bands we've seen, tried to include live video's of tracks we've heard.
  • A skylit drive
Post-hardcore band, the vocals are a bit .. female (his looks also actually). 30 meter from the stage it was hard to determine whether you were listening to a male or female vocal. Thought the supporting vocal of the bass-player is fitter.

  • Caliban
One of the big names in metalcore, the German Caliban. Second time or third time I've seen them perform, last time was the 10th anniversary of Graspop 2006. Those insane breakdowns are just perfect..

  • Haste the day
Christian metalcore band .. didn't really enjoy the god-loves-us-all-talk in between but hey, great song to sing by the side of your mate(s)!

  • Millencolin
One of the old school punkrock bands, been around for almost 20 years now. You might recognize it like many of us do from .. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2! No cigar is one of their best (or at least most popular) Fitting in is overrated anyway!

  • Funeral for a friend
Pukkelpop 2007 Gert (follow'm here) told me about Funeral, especially Into oblivion and Roses for the dead caught me in the moment (in a good sense). Although they're awesome I didn't enjoy the show, the bass was way to overwhelming, it really messed up the sound too bad really.

  • Zebrahead
Typical rapping poppunk band that loves having fun on stage, first noticed them ages ago with their hit "Playmate of the year" which was obviously a single to gain popularity, they have far better songs actually!

  • A Wilhelm scream
Shame I didn't check them out earlier .. performed quite good, crowd was going insane at their energetic music!

  • Strike anywhere
A well placed f*** you for mister R. Murdock at the beginning of this song (I think so). I it love when he speeches, there's so much wrong in this world and strike anywhere is one of the "few" bands who have the dignity to bring it forth the political views.

  • 88 fingers Louie
Mmm don't know, wasn't really that interesting, I honestly never heard their music before yesterday but they seemed rather "boring" or I was too tired to pay attention.

  • Sum 41
This was the bomb .. the exact same opening, great show, they actually communicate and play with the audience .. I love bands who do something extra instead of just playing and leaving afterwards.

  • The Bronx
The Bronx's original goal was to bring passionate, blood-and-sweat punk rock into the 21st Century. Somewhere at that large festival-tent you could still smell that little club-sweat. I'd rather see them in a club with not even enough room to put up a decent podium.

  • Parkway drive
Heavy guitars, deep vocals, sickening speed .. that's parkway drive. Drive's set was, for me, the heaviest on Groezrock .. the feeling of smashing everything in my way. It's the kind of music that releases you from all thoughts of past and future for an instance, just you .. screaming from the top of your lungs together with a few thousand. You could read the appreciation on the frontman's face for the energy released by the crowd, he pushed himself so far he had to pause for a minute and jump right back in. The crowd was going insane at this one.

  • Story of the year
I don't know how but hell .. those guys have breath. They be jumping around and doing back flips with their guitars like it ain't nothing.

  • Bad religion
They don't look like punk gods (tattoos, etc ..) but they still stand after 30 years. Those lyrics .. simply got to love them. You can read it like a book of protest. The sad thing is, lyrics from 30 years ago still count, the question one may ask is .. will anything ever change?

  • Hatebreed
Too bad they had to cancel due to the Vulcano eruption. We sang Destroy everything anyway of course. Fuck vulcanos 2010! All credits go to not siskel (check out her gallery, pretty awesome pictures there!)

T-shirt was designed by Parkway drive, they got here just in time.
